Our
mission is to empower single parents and their children by providing
hope, support, and resources so that families can become self-sustaining.
Who
We Serve
According
to the 2000 U.S. Census, The median income of families maintained
by women with no husband present continued to be lower than that
of other families. The median family income for female householders
with no husband present in 1999 was $25,500, about half of the family
income of all families and less than half of married-couple families.
After adjusting for inflation, this amount was also less than the
median family income of married-couple families in 1969 ($39,800).

In the Santa Clarita Valley, 6.1% of SCV households (3,101) are
headed by female households with children under 18 years and no
husband present. (Source: Infoplease.com http://www.infoplease.com/us/census/data/california/santa-clarita/economic.html)
Most single mothers come to us in a state of emotional or financial
crisis. We seek to meet this short term need, but more importantly
to assist them by developing long term solutions.
While
the majority of the clients we serve are single mothers, we also
desire to aid the increasing number of single fathers who have sole
custody of their children by providing support services to meet
their unique needs.
History of Single Mothers Outreach
Single
Mothers Outreach was founded in 1995 as a support and resource for
single mothers struggling through the effects of divorce or the
death of a spouse. Single Mothers Outreach became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization in May 1998. Since then, over 1600 families have been
served.
In
November 2007, the Board of Directors began a major reorganization
to improve the quality and range of services it provides. As a result,
Single Mothers Outreach updated its mission statement and developed
a new plan of services to single parents and their children.
In January 2008, Single Mothers Outreach relocated to its present
location in downtown Newhall, sharing the office space with the
Los Angeles County Service Center of the Santa Clarita Valley and
the Salvation Army. Single Mothers Outreach collaborates with both
agencies and other community nonprofits in providing a full range
of services to single parents and their families.

We consider our volunteers to be the heart of SMO, a committed
group of people, including single mothers, who are motivated by
